ned,
I have a friend who is a high ranking official in our local Sherrif's department. He says that it is almost 100% of the time when a sex offender is arrested, he has porn on his computer (I should include women, too.) That doesn't mean that everyone who views porn will be a molester, rapist, or pedophile, but who knows what lurks within our deepest workings of our minds. It has been often said that, "A chain is only as strong as its weakest link." I wonder, how many of us know each of our inner links and their strength? Are we rusting them away with each use of pornography?

Has anyone heard of the 5 year old in Salt Lake City that was kidnapped, murdered, and the abused by her kidnapper? I was shocked by the story, but even more shocked when they announced the name of the murderer. He had worked at the same location as I do up until about 1 month before all this took place. I never knew much about him other than he was very quiet, but then I didn't work closely with him.
Since then, I have heard from those who did work closely with him about his "stories" of how his wife was trying to frame him by putting child porn on his computer so he would look like the bad one in the relationship. He had a thousand excuses for why he was the way he was and no one took him seriously. Those who worked closely with him assumed he was "all talk."
It's a sick and very sad story and I have to wonder how much internet pornography added to his actions? It made me stop and think, "where could it lead me?" |

Kahlil Gibran once wrote:
"Oftentimes have I heard you speak of one who commits a wrong as though he were not one of you, but a stranger unto you and an intruder upon your world.
But I say that even as the holy and the righteous cannot rise beyond the highest which is in each one of you,
So the wicked and the weak cannot fall lower than the lowest which is in you also."
None of us knows the limit of the good we can do, but we also don't know the limit of the evil. I would say that nearly all of us have the scales tipped heavily toward the good side. But, given the right circumstances, scales can swing the other way.
Yes, it is scary, but sometimes we need to ask ourselves these scary questions to check our own "balance." |
